Coffee Liqueur Recipe

Here's a fun recipe, kinda different, it's an "adult" recipe. If you like Kahlúa, then you should love this! It's a coffee liquor, I made and bottled up some and it's really good, especially mixed with milk to make a White Russian.

Yeah, I tried some, see the bottle on the left? Yeah, it's good! 




Coffee Liqueur

Ingredients

4 cups white sugar
4 cups water
3/4 cup instant coffee granules
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
4 cups vodka

Directions

1. In a 3 quart saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in instant coffee, and allow to cool. I always skim off the foam that forms on top when it's cool, before adding alcohol.
2. When cool, stir in vanilla extract and vodka. Pour into clean bottles. Close bottles tightly, and store in a cool dark place.

One thing I have found is you have to shake it just about every day, the sugar wants to crystallize, so shaking it helps keep everything together.

I made mine with Everclear instead of Vodka, it's what I had on hand, it made it much stronger, I'm going to try it again with Vokda soon.

  4. Hmmm... sugar crystalizing. Would it be just as sweet and not have worry about crystalizing if you used "Splenda"?

    Also, if you don't use Splenda, the use of corn syrup would prevent any crystalizing... plus you won't have to boil to dissolve the sugar... just a thought.

  5. Ohhh Joe, sorry, I refuse to use artificial sweeteners, and corn syrup is not any better, especially high fructose corn syrup. I know I don't always eat extremely healthy, and this recipe certainly doesn't fall into the "healthy" category, but there are things I have always avoided, and artificial sweeteners is a biggie, do a Google search on them and read the horrors, cancers, chemical imbalances, headache, dizziness, change in mood, vomiting or nausea, abdominal pain and cramps, change in vision, diarrhea, seizures/convulsions, memory loss, and fatigue. Along with these symptoms, links to aspartame are made for fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, and various cancers, gastrointestinal problems (bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea), skin irritations (rash, hives, redness, itching, swelling), wheezing, cough, runny nose, chest pains, palpitations, anxiety, anger, moods swings, depression, and itchy eyes...

    You are far better off eating real sugar, just do it in moderation. Another reason you want real sugar in this recipe, it adds a thickness to it, makes it good! :)

  6. Joe, I noticed your link is to a diabetic website, the link is broken BTW, anyhoo if you are diabetic, then you don't need to be consuming alcohol or huge quantities of sugar. Again, I still don't think anyone needs to be consuming any artificial sweeteners, there are too many natural alternatives.

  8. Seeing the bottle of Everclear reminded me of my early days in the service a long time ago. We had a big ole strapping boy from Tennessee in our barracks who could have been Sgt York reincarnated and shot just as well! Every time he went home on leave he came back with a couple of quarts of Tennessee homegrown moonshine! Strongest stuff I ever tasted! He drank it like soda pop. When we ran out of moonshine, the next closest thing was Everclear. It did not take very much of either for this guy to be stretched out in bed and lights out for him.
