It's Hot!

In the heat.Image by Andi♥ via Flickr

Holy crap it's hot. Yeah, I know, I live in the high desert, it's supposed to be hot, I have gotten spoiled though, it's usually mild, warmish but as soon as you find some shade it's almost cool. At least at night it gets cool, all but cold. It's been hot inside the sky cabin the last couple of days, the only place that is tolerable is in front of the computer, it's right next to the window and there is usually a breeze, the other place is under the house. I have been working on Mountain Man Bob to fix me up with somewhere to sit or lay down under there, if I had that along with some power for my computer, I'll be a happy camper. At least the humidity is low.

I have also been working on Mountain Man Bob to put in more ventilation on the sky castle, we have lots of windows, but they open from the bottom like most windows, it does nothing for the heat that collects in the ceiling, and it does build up, we need a way to let that heat out.

This is the hottest part of the summer for us, so if we can just get through this part, it will get better. Gotta go shampoo my hair, it's a work day for me, if you can call what I do at the country store work, sitting on the porch talking to my favorite locals... ;)

  1. Sounds like a perfect job to me! I'll just bet that Mountain Man Bob will come up with something!

    Thanks for the update...

  2. 10-4 on the heat, Wretha. We're feeling it too up here in Dallas. I work outside in the sun most days, and it's getting almost unbearable.
Under the house sounds about right. I hope there's not any critters down there. I hope y'all got some rain from all this we've been having lately.

  3. Yeah HJ, it is the perfect "job", though today was a bit of a slow day. The fan helps, but when it's 90+ outside and almost 100 inside the sky castle, it's not enough. We have a (nearly) brand new AC window unit, we used it once before coming out here, I think we are going to get it out. I know it will run off our system, we tested it once before we left, used 2 deep cycle batteries and our inverter, it worked like a charm.

Allen, uggg, I remember how hot and humid it got in Dallas, I don't want any part of THAT again. No, there are no critters under the house, "under the house" is really the first floor, we live on the second floor, the first floor just isn't finished, but it's far FAR cooler than the second floor.

We have had some teasers but no real rain in about a week. That will change soon, our rainy season is about to begin, then it will rain every day.

  4. Wretha,

It's getting hot here too. Not as hot as you have it though. How do you keep your cool with all the heat?

We have a pool and the kids stay in there most of the time and shade trees are our friend.
Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us that are cutting the dependency of the grid.

  5. Susan, thanks for writing, hmm, we keep cool by either sleeping during the heat of the day or going under the house, that's not as draconian as it sounds, our house is basically 2 stories tall, the first floor is unfinished, dirt floor and such, it's much MUCH cooler under there.

This is the hottest part of the summer, it doesn't last very long, just a few weeks, then the rainy season hits. Oh it also cools off quite a bit at night, typical desert weather, hot days, cool nights.
